Opening, viewing and browsing images back to top

To view an image, start Photo Gadget Viewer, click the Open button on the toolbar, select the image file and click Open. The image opens in the viewer and then you can double-click anywhere on the viewing area, press ENTER on the keyboard or click Full screen button on the toolbar to switch to full-screen view. Use the same commands to return from full-screen view.

While in the full-screen view the program's toolbar goes away but you can bring it back at any time by moving the mouse pointer to the top of the screen. Pressing ESC on the keyboard brings you one step back in all situations, from full-screen to the viewer and if pressed again it closes the program.

If there are other images in the same folder with the opened image you can use Next/Previous toolbar buttons to browse through them. As an alternative you can press PAGE DOWN, RIGHT ARROW or SPACE BAR for Next and PAGE UP or LEFT ARROW for Previous image. Up and down mouse-wheel movements are also recognized.

In the thumbnails view you can see small thumbnail representations of all photos available in the current folder. Press 'V' on the keyboard or click the View image/thumbnails button on the toolbar to switch views. If auto-rotate option is enabled it will also work for thumbnails.

Sorting image files by name, date or size back to top

Photo Gadget Viewer can sort image files in three different ways: by name, by date or by size. The type of sort you choose determines the order of images when you browse through them. It is usual that image files are sorted by name and viewed that way as digital cameras number them automatically. However, there are cases when sorting by name is not the best solution. In those situations you can try the other two options and sort image files chronologically either by file creation date or by file size.

Make your choice for sorting image files in the program's Help and Settings menu. Ascending order is default and if you want to switch to descending order simply repeat the same selection again. You can always check which sorting type is currently active in the program's status bar.

  Settings dialog back to top

To access the Settings dialog click Help and Settings button on the toolbar and choose Settings option from the drop-down menu. Settings dialog allows you to enable/disable auto-rotate based on EXIF option and associate supported image file types with Photo Gadget Viewer.

If auto-rotate option is enabled and if your digital camera stores information about image orientation in its EXIF data set then Photo Gadget Viewer will rotate it automatically when necessary so you can see the image properly. If some image file type is associated with the program then double-clicking a file of that type will automatically open it in the viewer.

Check for updates option back to top

To use this option you have to be connected to the internet and if you have a firewall you have to allow Photo Gadget Viewer to access that connection. When you click Check for Updates button on the toolbar or choose that option from the Help and Settings menu the program will access its version file on the web and compare the latest published version with the one you currently have.

As a result you will be notified that your Photo Gadget Viewer is up to date or you will get an option to download the latest version. If checking for update fails you will get an error message.

Image editing toolbar options back to top

You certainly noticed that the program's toolbar features a set of buttons for editing images. Those options do not belong to Photo Gadget Viewer. To get them enabled you have to download and install Photo Gadget Pro that will automatically integrate with the viewer.

A button for downloading Photo Gadget Pro is placed conveniently on the viewer's toolbar and disappears after Photo Gadget Pro is installed. Note that Photo Gadget Pro is not free, there is a license fee to be paid, but it will allow you 15 days for trying with absolutely no functional limits. Of course, if you do not like Photo Gadget Pro you can still continue to use Photo Gadget Viewer as before so there is nothing to lose.

If you want to check details on Photo Gadget Pro now please follow the link to its home page.

Save as… and Open with external program back to top

Save as… option allows you to make a copy of a photo in a different folder. Additionally, if you choose a different file type than the original the program will perform format conversion before saving the file with new extension. Keyboard shortcut for this option is 'S'.

When you click on Open with external program option on the toolbar the viewer will look in the system registry for programs that are registered for the corresponding file extension and show you the list to choose from. Then choose the program and click Open to get the current photo opened in it. If the system registry list is empty for any reason Photo Gadget Viewer will show you the standard browsing dialog so you can select an external program by yourself. Keyboard shortcut for this option is 'E'.

Installing/Upgrading Photo Gadget Viewer back to top

  1. Download the program installation file PGVIEWER.EXE to your desktop or some temporary folder.
  2. Double-click on PGVIEWER.EXE and follow instructions on the screen. We stongly recommend you to close down all other programs before starting the installation process.
  3. Start Photo Gadget Viewer by double-clicking its icon on the desktop or through the Start/Programs menu of your computer.

Removing Photo Gadget Viewer back to top

  1. Make sure you closed down the program.
  2. Go to Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs, find Photo Gadget Viewer in the list, select it and click Remove.

NOTE: If you did not follow the procedure outlined above and tried to remove/delete/uninstall the program in some other way then most likely you did not succeed. In that case it can also happen that the program is no longer listed in the Add/Remove Programs dialog. To clear things up and finally uninstall the program you will have to install it again first, to the same folder as before, and then go through the correct removal process.
